What is Alexa?

By MandM On August 22nd, 2008

Alexa provides information on web traffic of your website. It computes your traffic ranking by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa toolbar and data obtained from other diverse traffic data sources.

The traffic rank is based on 3 months of aggregated historical traffic and is a combined measure of page views and users. The main Alexa traffic rank is based on a value derived from these two quantities averaged over time (so that the rank of a site reflects both the number of users who visit that site as well as the number of pages on the site viewed by those users). The three-month change is determined by comparing the site’s current rank with its rank from three months ago. For example, on July 1, the three-month change would show the difference between the rank based on traffic during the first quarter of the year and the rank based on traffic during the second quarter.

So - I started tracking my Alexa rank since re-launching this site. In order to have a traffic linegraph, my site has to reach below 100,000 (I am heading in the right direction). The first few weeks after my re-launch, there was no ranking. But on:

7/17/08 = 7,105,243
7/21 = 3,591,634
7/24 = 1,927,408
7/28 = 1,326,681
7/29 = 1,055,925
8/06 = 857,778
8/16 = 498,216
8/20 = 487,090
8/22 = 448,967

So check your favorite site ranking by entering the url at the top Alexa search bar. Click Here for Alexa!

  1. How did you get such a large increase in such a short amount of time? I’ve been active on my blog since June and I started at around the 8million mark and I just recently broke 700k. I looked you up again and saw hat you are now down to around 230k+-.

    Any advice?

  2. Hi Ann - sorry I haven’t responded back. Was away on a vacation.
Breaking 700K is not a bad achievement - since the fact that you only started in June of this year. I may be at 230K - but I’ve had this site since 2006 (though I made significant changes this summer).
You’ve joined entrecard so that is good.
But my only advice is to give 50% of your time to blogging and the other 50% to marketing. Dropping in Entrecard is Marketing. Participate in their forum. Join other blogging communities such as Blog Catalog. Social network with Digg, Stumbleupon, Reddit, etc. Since your site is about travel - go into other travel blogs and create comments (with a link back to your site).
    I hope this helps.
    Good luck!
